Rolling infectious rhythms, a soulful, soaring voice, this inseparable pairing of voice and drum are the very essence of Tara’s wild, rooted, earthy power. Her lyrics are potent, relevant, and soul stirring. Tara’s band weave lush arrangements and harmonies into her songs. Her words and music touch the souls of her listeners and explore our human connection to the natural world. She has been performing all over the New England area and beyond for more than fifteen years. Tara's band of stellar accompanists are comprised of Saibhung Singh Khalsa on upright bass, Lou Eastman on acoustic guitar, and Shana DeLorie and Grace Aldrich singing blended harmonies.
Shana R. DeLorie
Shana began singing harmonies in 2012 when one of Tara’s friend’s Tudie Stropparo suggested she have Shana sit in with her at an upcoming gig. Tara was looking for a back up singer and struggling to find one with the desired qualities needed: a good ear, an ability to lock tight on a harmony relatively easefully, a willingness to take vocal directions and come up with her own ideas, and to be positive and grounded. Shana melded right into the feel and shape of Tara’s songs and has been singing with the band ever since. Prior to joining Tara, Shana has sung lead and back-up for many area artists including Seth Chatfield and Skip Jackson.
Her influences span a wide range. As a little girl she sang in church. As an adult she devours all kinds of musical genres including Metal, Blues,Rock, and R&B. Some of her vocal influences are Janis Joplin and Billie Holiday. When she isn’t singing on stage she can be found hiking, walking, running a household, envisioning and making a healthy planet, communing with nature, and participating in positive change in this world, all while singing to she and her wife’s baby.
In 2012, Grace was the receptionist at a local Chiropractor’s Office. The Chiropractor, Saibhung Kaur Khalsa, just happened to be the wife of Tara’s bassist Saibhung Singh Khalsa. While adjusting her clients, Saibhung Kaur would often hear Grace singing on the other side of the wall. Upon receiving Grace’s rich and emotive tones, she hastily reported her findings to her husband Saibhung Singh, and one night at rehearsal he strongly recommended that Tara invite Grace to join Shana at next practice. Tara was searching for a second harmony singer anyway! Ask and you shall receive.
It is common knowledge that solid, jazzy, earthy, ‘locked in’ three part harmonies have been known to tame agitated lions and drop people to their knees. The mix of Shana and Grace’s voices were delicious and evocative, and here we are still singing today.
Grace is no stranger to singing and performing. As a teenager in Boston, Grace sang as a soloist in the Black Nativity and with the Boston Pops as a member of her high school’s Gospel Choir. She has been a featured storyteller multiple times in Peterborough New Hampshire’s ‘Black Fly Story Hour’. Her recent story ‘Baby on Board’ was recently published in Yankee Magazine. When she isn’t singing on stage, Grace is a Mother, a business owner of a massage therapy practice, an advocate, and a healer.
Between the thick, shock white strands of waist length hair sits a sophisticated guitarist who plays with both technical skill and emotional intuition. He is a self-taught guitarist with a wealth of musical knowledge. He is dedicated to and disciplined in his practice of playing to the point where the instrument is an extension of his psychic and intrinsic creativity. It can't go unnoticed that Lou and Tara both happen to share the same Birthday 3/18. It is common for Lou to finish Tara’s musical sentences through the guitar, or to play for her a sonic representation of the visual image she describes.The transition from Hardcore, Metal, Rock, and Ska to Acoustic Folk was easy for him because of his innate musical sensibilities.
Lou studied at the Los Angeles Recording School in audio engineering and mixing, at Utah Valley University in Music Theory, he has worked in sound reinforcement, promotion, production, audio recording engineering, and has navigated the many artist management angles of the music business in addition to playing and performing. In addition to the Tare Greenblatt Band, Lou composes and performs with two other projects: End of Never (hard rock, jam, funk) and Rumors of War (hardcore metal).
Some of Lou’s influences are Michael Hedges, Doc Watson, Neil Young, Alex Lifeson, Jimmy Page, Martin Barre, and David Rhodes to name a few. Similarly to finding Shana & Grace, it was upon the recommendation of Tara’s previous harmony singer and friend Kate Baker, that Tara try Lou out. Lou has been playing with Tara as her guitarist since 2007. To sustain his love and devotion to his family and his music, Lou works full time as a New Media Designer and Consultant.
Saibhung Singh Khalsa
His musical career has had many twists and turns but music is always all around and deep inside of him. He began on the piano at age 9 but when his German piano teacher pushed him off the piano bench for playing blues, he quit piano and found a guitar. He studied jazz with Milford Graves in college and began playing upright bass. He has studied classic Kirtan in India and performed on four continents. Currently he is also playing with The Folksoul Band, The Anahata Kirtan Group and Snatam Kaur.
Saibhung is a perceptive, innate, and deeply feeling musician. He is a Father, a husband, a beacon to his family, and to his spiritual, and musical communities. His musical influences include Nigerian Music, The Beatles, Ravi Shankar, Hendrix, Coltrane, and the music of the Sikh Tradition.
It was in 2006 that Saibhung Singh offered to play bass for Tara. To this day, he continues to be the fulcrum of sound resonating underneath her songs. His bass playing is the anchor in the band. It is voluminous, steady, and seismic at times. He creates the sound of the planet yawning, or creaking with discomfort, the sound of tree roots pushing down further into the earth’s soil. He feels alive and whole playing with The Tara Greenblatt Band.
